Medicare is a government health insurance program for those aged 65 and older, as well as certain individuals with disabilities. While Medicare offers extensive benefits, it’s equally important to recognize its coverage limitations and gaps to prevent unexpected expenses.
Understanding what Medicare does not cover empowers you to explore alternative options and ensure comprehensive healthcare access as you approach 65 or qualify for Medicare due to disabilities.
Dental Care
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) generally does not cover routine dental exams, cleanings, fillings, or dentures, leaving beneficiaries responsible for the full cost of these services.
Routine dental exams and cleanings are essential for oral health, but they are not considered medically necessary by Original Medicare and, therefore, are not covered.
Fillings, crowns, and other restorative dental procedures are also not covered by Medicare.
The cost of dentures, whether partial or complete sets, is not covered under Original Medicare. Dentures are classified as dental appliances and fall outside of Medicare’s coverage.
Despite limited dental coverage under Original Medicare, alternative options can help address dental care needs. Medicare Advantage plans (Part C), offered by private insurance companies, often provide additional benefits beyond Original Medicare. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental coverage, covering routine dental exams, cleanings, fillings, and even dentures. Reviewing the dental benefits of each Medicare Advantage plan is crucial to finding suitable coverage.
Standalone dental insurance plans are another option. These plans focus solely on dental coverage and can be purchased separately to supplement Original Medicare. They offer varying levels of coverage for routine dental services, restorative procedures, and dentures, allowing beneficiaries to choose a plan that meets their dental care needs.
